I am honored to be featured as Master Class in the brand new GIMP Magazine, an elegant and free mag about GIMP, the smart alternative to Photoshop.
The feature is a tutorial of one of my post-apocalyptical photomanipulation, visible here on DA : [link]

For GIMP Map issue 1 : [link]
The mag is readable online or downloadable in PDF.

Hi Ludo,

I'm slowly learning a bit about photomanipulation. I currently use paint.net and I was toying with buying Photoshop Elements 11 - the basic photoshop package.

What I want to be able to do is use custom brushes and have better selection tools - will GIMP give me those?

I'd value your thoughts.

Regards

Stephen

Hello Stephen,
Thanks for considering Gimp!
Definitely, Gimp has what you want : brushes customization and various selection tools.
I won't detail here, but the customization of the brushes is limitless to me ! You should search the web for keywords on you needs, like "Gimp custom brush" and "Gimp selection tools". For sure you will find goog tutorials or articles about that.
Good work!
Ludovic

I'm glad to learn you are starting with Gimp! Keep going on! It can take time but it becomes rewarding ni the end. I have spent years on Photoshop, and migrating to Gimp was a very progressive move that took me about 2 years. I am now fully operational and at ease with Gimp and have zero use of Photoshop.
Also, keep an eye on Gimp Magazine! Issue #2 is due this december and will give more examples of excellence with this program.

Some of the "big" concepts escape me. Also, lots of tiny little details within some of the tools. Nonsensical to me yet. Need a giant users manual.

Hey Ludo, also, I forgot, you should check out this guy's BLOG. He's very active and has a keen interest in Japanese and French traditional carpentry. I think he would love your models of the medieval French timber homes. [link]
