Sheffield and the space elevator by Ludo38 Sheffield and the space elevator by Ludo38
We see here the base of the space elevator on Mars, on the top of Sheffield, a tented town on Pavonis Mons, as imagined by Kim Stanley Robinson's novel Red Mars.

Made with The Gimp on Linux-Ubuntu.

The elevator cable is thicker than I picture it from the descriptions in the book (it often sounds like it's barely visible to the naked eye), but it's great to see someone doing some art based on the series.

Thank you. It's great to have people enjoying work based on these books. I wish the Mats Trilogy could gain the huge reputation of stuffs like Star Wars. It deserves a great community of fans, and there is so much to put in picture in there...

Yes, the cable is supposed to be barely visible, but this sight is from very close, so normal that we see it that big.
Have you seen my other views of it ? I made 4 other montages where it's just a thin line. And I like this idea of a scale very hard to picture.

Yes, when I commented on this I hadn't seen your other images. The way you've depicted the cable in the others is exactly how I pictured it. :)

A few years ago there was an attempt to make a tv series or a movie based on the books, but I think it must have been too expensive to make. It's a shame, but your images are the next best thing.

:) Thank you very much !
Actually, I think it's good the TV series wasn't made, because it was going in a quite bad way it seems. The team working on it wasn't the kind that would respect the high class level of KSR. Maybe someday there will be a kind of film based on Red Mars. I hope! But it has to be a masterpiece, or nothing.

Ah, that's interesting to hear. I only ever read a very short paragraph from 2009 saying they were planning a movie or tv series, so I didn't know the details. I agree, it's not worth doing unless it's done well.

It would take a lot of money and good writing, but if it was done well it'd be amazing.

I loved Red Mars, such an inspiration in my youth.
You've really done it justice with these pieces.

Thanks you very much ! Curiously, very few artists have worked on ullustrations of this great book. I'm excited in exploring this visually unexplored territories.
